Grades and standardisation

Turmeric powder is bought on curcumin, colour and cleanliness rather than a standardised assay. Lead is screened on every lot, because a curcumin test cannot detect lead chromate adulteration.

Questions about Turmeric Powder

What is the difference between Alleppey and Madras turmeric?

They are curcumin and colour grades. Alleppey carries more curcumin, typically 3–5%, and a deep orange colour; Madras, typically 2–3%, is a brighter yellow. Curcumin is certified on every lot.

Is turmeric powder tested for lead?

Yes, on every lot, by ICP-MS, with a Sudan dye screen. Lead chromate adulteration is not detected by a curcumin assay, so it is tested for separately.
